Non-Contact Encoder for the Automation Industry

BackgroundAutomation plays an increasing important role in industrial applications. To realise these requirements, sensors are used for measurements to control and manage processes.
ApplicationsIn a wide range of applications, particularly in the food, textile, wood and paper industry, the determination of length and speed of hot, sticky or highly sensitive surfaces is often quite difficult. The commonly used shaft encoders with a measuring wheel are not suitable for these applications because of the risk of contamination and damage of the surface. Furthermore the accuracy of a mechanical sensor system is reduced by slippage, which can lead to significant measuring errors in practice.

TechnologyThe measuring principle is based on a correlation method whereby the surface is observed by a camera. Displacement, direction and velocity are analyzed and calculated by comparison of the respective surface pictures. Furthermore the determination of standstill and movement in x and y direction is possible. The installation is straight forward and easy. No further mechanical connections are required. Therefore the sensor provides low installation, service and maintenance costs.
